Youth Programs:
After School Tutoring:
In 2003 Monument Crisis Center initiated an after school tutoring program for children between the ages of 5 and 12. The program, "After School Cafe", meets every Thursday afternoon during the school year. Teen volunteers from local high schools tutor, help with homework and practice reading skills with the children; the teens serve as mentors for the children who often lack positive role models.
Summer Camp:
During the summer Monument Crisis Center runs a six-week summer camp for elementary aged children. Two staff members and fifteen teen counselors organize the program, giving the children the opportunity to spend quality time being active and learning new skills with older peer role models.
Activities for camp include field trips, games in the park, guest speakers and a week-long wildlife education program at the LIndsay Wildlife Musuem. In a neighborhood with very few parks and even fewer yards, this program provides the children with a safe environment to play and learn.
Youth Advisory Board (YAB):
The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) began in February of 2008 as a leadership development and youth enrichment program for high school students. Currently YAB focuses on community service, self-expression through art and photography and preparing students for college. The Center connects YAB members to colleges around the Bay Area by setting up tours and appointments with alumni and university staff. In addition, YAB members make strong connections with their own community through volunteering at the Center. The teens learn to work together to positively impact themselves and their local community.
How Can You Help?
Collect and donate school supplies or nutritious snacks for the children or donate your time to share a special activity with the children. High school students may volunteer as summer counselors and tutors during the school year!
